June 8th 2012
Yep, it’s another big day for the environmental movement. World Oceans Day has been held every June 8th since 2002. It’s sponsored by The Ocean Project and The World Ocean Network. As usual there are plenty of activities and events to get involved in. Also you should check out wildexplorer.org’s blog with some more great ideas for reducing plastic pollution on WOD.
However, if you’re like me and found out a little too late to do very much with your day, there is at least one thing you can do: Wear Blue, Tell Two. It’s pretty simple and easy to implement. Wear some blue clothes, then use that as a talking point to let those around you know about World Oceans Day. Then you can share at least two facts about why it’s important to protect the oceans, and ways that they can help. Have a look at the WOD website for some ideas of what you can share, and even a cool t-shirt graphic that you could print out to wear. If you’ve got t-shirt printing available, that is. I wouldn’t suggest painting yourself blue though; you never know how it might turn out…
Happy World Oceans Day! Hope you find something good to celebrate it by. Myself, I’m off to the beach.
